Winton: Town that Lumber Built
by Margaret Sweet
The history of Winton is the history of logging in northeastern Minnesota. If there had not been the abundance of white pine in this area there would not have been a need for the town. As this story shows, the town of Winton rose and fell with the white pine logging. The people who made Winton such an interesting place showed their adventurous spirits and their business acumen as they raped and pillaged their way across the great north woods. When the trees were gone, so were the men whose names to this day speak volumes about our land. How they acquired the land and made their fortunes is a tale worth knowing.
