Gransfors Bruk - Double Bit Throwing Axe

The Double Bit Competition Throwing Axe is specifically designed for competition target throwing. The faces are 6" and are double sharpened to pierce the target and have excellent grip. The hickory handle is smooth and straight to slide through the hands upon release. The handle is 29" long and the axe comes with two leather sheaths to cover the sharp edges.

Forged from a special Swedish axe steel, the edges are tempered and annealed to the correct toughness. First quality hickory handles. Axeheads are oiled and protected by a grain leather sheath. Each axe comes with a book that describes maintenance and use in detail, along with photos of the craftsman at work.

Different models of the double bit axes have been popular in the US since the last quarter of the 19th century because of it's balanced feel and versatility. Typically, one edge was sharpened to a finely honed, narrow "felling edge," while the second was ground slightly blunter, and used for knots and cutting near the ground where a finely sharpened edge was more likely to be damaged.  Today, the double bit axe is used as a throwing axe for timber sports. The head weighs 3 lb and the face of the bits are about 6". The throwing axe has a 29" straight hickory handle.

The imbalance in demand and delivery capacity is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

The increased demand is not isolated to our industry, and we are experiencing shortages on most of our raw materials. Steel supply is very constrained now and Gränsfors is working closely with our suppliers to secure deliveries of key materials. We have increased our raw material buffers to counter the longer lead times, however on some specifications the lead times are long and uncertain beyond what can be managed with increased buffers alone. The huge global demand for steel has of course also driven up prices, and we are seeing significant price hikes across our raw material spend.
